The Best Tint Percentage for a Texas Summer

· 4 min read

The short answer

For most cars in Central Texas: 35% on the front sides and 20–25% on the back. 35% up front gives you margin over the legal 25% minimum once factory glass is counted, and 20–25% behind matches most factory privacy glass. But if you're tinting because of heat rather than looks, pick the film grade first and the percentage second — a 50% Ceramic IR blocks more infrared than a 20% Color Stable, and it's legal on every window.

The practical answer#

Common shade choices and what they're for
VLTLooks likeWhere it works
5%Limo. Can't see in, hard to see out at nightBack glass only in Texas
20%The look most people pictureBack sides and rear; matches factory privacy glass
35%Close to a truck's factory rear tintLegal up front, the practical default
50%Light — heat control without the lookLegal up front; good if night driving matters
70%Near-clearLegal anywhere; ceramic heat rejection, barely visible

If heat is the reason, invert the question#

People walk in asking for a percentage and finish by asking about heat. It's worth doing in the other order. Ceramic IR Series at 50% rejects 83% of the infrared. Color Stable Series at 25% — far darker, far more conspicuous — manages 40%. If what you want is a cooler car rather than a darker one, the film grade is doing that work, not the shade.

What percentage is factory privacy glass?

Usually somewhere between 15% and 26% VLT on the back sides and rear of trucks and SUVs. That's why matching the front to 35% often looks slightly lighter up front — which is exactly what Texas law requires anyway.

Can I go darker than 35% on the front if I mostly drive at night?

Not legally — front sides have to let more than 25% through no matter when you drive. We'll still install it if that's what you want; the citation is yours to deal with, not ours. But if glare on the drive home is the actual problem, a light ceramic cuts infrared and UV without cutting the visible light you need, and it's legal at every shade.
