Purple window tint is dyed film whose dye has broken down under UV, and the colour does not come back — it has to be removed and replaced. The removal itself is straightforward on side glass but genuinely risky on the rear window, where the defroster grid is printed on the same inside surface the film sits on. A razor takes those lines off with the tint and they can't be put back.

In a Central Texas house the problem room is almost always the west-facing one: it takes the sun at its lowest angle, straight through the glass rather than over the roof, for the three hottest hours of the day. Window film is the fix that doesn't require replacing the windows — it rejects solar heat before it enters the room, cuts the glare that makes a screen unreadable, and blocks the UV that bleaches flooring in a stripe along the wall.

Stripping old film costs $45 for the front two windows, $85 for the back sides and rear glass, and $120 for a full car when we're installing new film on the same visit — the glass only gets prepped once, so doing both together always costs less than doing them apart. Removal on its own is quoted after we've seen the film, because film from last year peels off in sheets and film from 2009 comes off in pieces.
